Bio

Dzesika Devic is a Canada-based, self taught photographer. Her hometown is Kitchener, ON which is where she attained her first digital camera in 2005. She originally received the camera as a gift from a friend in order to further her interest in drawing. However, soon after receiving the camera, she quickly forgot all about drawing and became carried away with taking pictures. Her interest began in photographing electrical sockets and wires that were prevalent in her parent’s home, self portraits, friends and family. Shortly after, she received her first film camera, a Canon AE-1, from a family friend. Unbeknownst to her, acquiring this camera was pivotal in the next phase of picture taking. She often sees herself as stumbling into photography, as it was other people who gifted her cameras in the beginning. From then on, she shot strictly film until 2011, and continues to shoot a mix of film and digital until today.

Artist Statement

When I began taking pictures, I was rather directionless in the subjects I liked to photograph. This “directionless” approach carried on well into the years later, as I enjoy experimenting with different cameras, films, and subjects, often letting my mood decide which style of photo I will take.

My original goal with taking pictures was to document moments for myself. I thought, if I document everything, I won'’t forget anything. While the goal is still the same today, my objective has grown. In noticing the mundane still life, or interactions, I hope the viewer can see the beauty in their everyday life as well. Noticing seemingly boring, yet pretty scenes, enriches our everyday life.

When it comes to photographing people, whether it be friends, family or strangers on the street, I want them to know the intent is because they are noticed and appreciated.
